is supposed to do the same thing for telephone calls. This time
it may be true. Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, is one of
the fastest-growing, and most misunderstood, technologies in the
world at the moment. Confusion, outdated beliefs, and urban mythology
reign over such simple issues as how it works, the quality of the
calls, and, of course, how much it costs-VoIP calls are not free
now, and they never will be."
Twenty years ago, the personal computer
was a classic example. It swept aside an older mainframe-based style
of computing, and eventually brought IBM, one of the world's mightiest
firms at the time, to its knees This week has been a coming-out
party of sorts for another disruptive technology, "voice over internet
protocol" (VoIP), which promises to be even more disruptive, and
of even greater benefit to consumers, than personal computers.
Free Phone Calls "It's obvious
to me that telephone calls are [becoming] free and if you fast forward
by 10 years, no phone company will be able to charge for phone calls...
so there is a transition of revenue streams from telephony to broadband
access for phone companies."
Synergy Research Group, a leading
market research firm, reports that today (2005) there are close
to 8 million home users worldwide using VoIP to make phone calls
over their broadband connections. By 2009, Synergy anticipates
this number to grow to 58.9 million home users using VoIP to
talk to friends and family around the world using broadband and
VoIP technology.
